American inventor, Samuel F. B. Morse, was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was the inventor of the signalling alphabet known as Morse Code.

The first issue of UK newspaper, The Observer, was published. It was the world's first Sunday newspaper and is still published today (2006).

Austrian composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, died at the age of 35. He was one of the most influential and popular composers of classical music.
