January
20th
French physicist, Andre Marie Ampere, was born in Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or, France. He is credited with the discovery of electromagnetism. The base unit of electric current, the Amp, is named in his honour.
April
19th
The Battle of Lexington and Concord took place. The battle marked the start of the American war of independence and was sparked when British forces attempted to confiscate the firearms of American colonists.
April
20th
British troops began the siege of Boston, Massachusetts, during the American war of independence.
June
15th
George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
