Haitian politician, Francois Duvalier, was born in Port-au-Prince. He was elected president of Haiti in 1957. In 1964 he altered the constitution of Haiti and then established himself as its president for life. He remained at his post until his death in 1971. His regime is considered as one of the most autocratic and repressive in the 20th century.

American actress, Katharine Hepburn, was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She is generally acknowledged as one of the most gifted actresses to ever grace the silver screen. She won 4 academy awards and earned a total 12 nominations in her acting career, which lasted over 60 years.

American actor, John Wayne, was born in Winterset, Iowa. He was born as Marion Robert Morrison and was one of the most celebrated stars of American cinema throughout his career, a career that spanned 5 decades, from his early appearances in the silent movies of the 1920's up until the 1970's.

Women in Norway were granted the right to vote.

More than 30 people died in a train wreck near Salem, Michigan, USA.

16th
Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory became Oklahoma and are admitted as the 46th U.S. state.

American writer, L. Sprague de Camp, was born in New York City. He was one of the most famous science fiction and fantasy authors of the 20th century.
December

An explosion in a coal mine at Monongah, West Virginia resulted in the death of 362 people. It was one of the worst mining accidents in history.
