Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi, died at the age of 87. He is considered by many as the most influential composer of the 19th century's Italian School of Opera.
February
1st
American actor, Clark Gable, was born in Ohio. He is widely considered as one of the greatest movie stars of the 20th century.
March
29th
American cartoon artist, Carl Barks, was born in Oregon. He was part of Walt Disney's cartoon team and was the creator of the famous ducks of the Disney family, Donald, Scrooge and the three nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie.
April
29th
Emperor of Japan, Hirohito, was born in Tokyo. His reign was the longest of any historical Japanese emperor and he was the emperor of Japan during World War II.
May
7th
American actor, Gary Cooper, was born in Helena, Montana. He is generally accepted as one of the great movie stars of the century.
June
11th
New Zealand annexed the Cook Islands. They remained a New Zealand protectorate until 1965 after which they became a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand.

24th
The first ever public exhibition of Pablo Picasso's work opened.
August
4th
American musician, Louis Armstrong, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

22nd
The Cadillac Motor company was founded. It was named after the 17th century French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, who founded the city of Detroit, Michigan in 1701.
September
6th
US President William McKinley was fatally shot while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. The assassin was the anarchist, Leon Czolgosz, whose motives were based on his anarchistic ideologies.

7th
The Boxer Rebellion in China ends with the signing of the Boxer Protocol. The rebellion had started in 1899 and was a movement against foreign influences in China. The rebels killed over 250 foreigners and tens of thousands of Christian Chinese nationals. The rebellion was opposed by an eight nation alliance comprised of the forces of Italy, United States, France, Austria-Hungary, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom and Russia.

French painter, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, died at the age of 37. His parents were first cousins and much inter-marriage had already taken place within the families. As a result he was plagued by a genetic defect which caused his legs to stop growing, thus he had abnormally short legs while his torso was that of a grown man. He is considered as one of the great post-Impressionist painters of all time.

United States president, Theodore Roosevelt, officially renamed the executive mansion to the White House.

5th
American animation pioneer, Walt Disney, was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was the founder of the Walt Disney Company, one of the most recognized companies in the world.

German physicist, Werner Heisenberg, was born in Wurzburg, Germany. He is widely considered as one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century and was the recipient of the Nobel Prize of Physics in 1932 for the creation of quantum mechanics.

The first Nobel Prizes were awarded. The Nobel Prizes were instituted through the will of Alfred Nobel, in order to award people who made an outstanding contribution to society.

17th
Austrian-born actor and director, Lee Strasberg, was born in Budaniv, Austria (now Ukraine). In 1949, he began teaching at the Actors Studio in New York City. Some of his students were Paul Newman, Al Pacino, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Fonda, James Dean, Dustin Hoffman and Robert DeNiro.
