Austrian scientist, Gregor Johann Mendel, died at the age of 62. He is considered as the father of genetics whose work gained widespread recognition many years after his death, well into the 20th century.

The first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was published.

American, Harry S. Truman, was born in Lamar, Missouri. He was the 34th President of the United States and his presidency is marked in history as the only one to have ever ordered a nuclear attack on the earth (Hiroshima & Nagasaki) as well as his hard line policy against the Soviet Union.

American doctor, John Harvey Kellogg, was awarded the patent for corn flakes.

3rd
The Dow Jones company published its 1st stock average.

Cameroon became a German colony. After World War I, the territory was split between France and Great Britain.

Italian painter and sculptor, Amedeo Modigliani, was born in Livorno. He is considered as one of the most original painters and sculptors of the 20th century.
