German engineer, Gottlieb Daimler, was born in the town of Schorndorf. He was a pioneer of internal-combustion engines and automobile development. He was the co-founder of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, one of the original companies that later formed the company that is now known as Daimler-Benz AG.

Slavery is abolished in all British colonies.

American painter, James McNeil Whistler, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was one of the most prominent painters of the 19th century, who lived and worked mostly in Britain and France. One of his most famous works is known as Whistler's Mother, although its actual title is 'Arrangement in Gray and Black: Portrait of the Artist's Mother'.

French artist, Edgar Degas, was born in Paris. He was one of the most prominent French artists of the 19th century, famous for his work in painting, sculpture, and drawing. He is also considered as one of the founders of the Impressionism movement.
November
11th
Hans Christian Andersen's, The Ugly Duckling, was first published. it is arguably one of the most well known children's tales of all time.
