May
7th
Italian composer, Antonio Salieri, died in Viena. He was one of the most popular musicians of his time and shared a somewhat antagonistic but not hostile relationship with Mozart.
May
20th
Greek revolutionary, Gregorios Dikaios, died at the age of 37. He was known as Papaflessas during the Greek revolution and he died in battle with Ottoman forces from Egypt.
August
6th
Bolivia gained its independence from the rule of Spain.
August
25th
Uruguay declared its independence from the rule of Brazil.
November
26th
The first college fraternity, the Kappa Alpha Society, was formed at Union College in Schenectady, New York.
