American computer engineer, Steve Jobs, was born in San Francisco. He is most known as the co-founder of Apple Computer and the CEO of the Pixar animation company. When Pixar was acquired by Disney in 2006, Jobs became the largest single shareholder of Disney.

French race car driver, Alain Prost, was born in Saint-Chamond. He won the formula one championship four times and is considered as one of the greatest race car drivers of all time.

Scottish biologist, Alexander Fleming, died at the age of 73. He is most known for his discovery of the antibiotic penicillin for which he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.

American actor, Gary Sinise, was born in Blue Island, Illinois. He became an international star after starring in the blockbuster film, Forrest Gump, alongside fellow actor Tom Hanks.

American actor, Bruce Willis, was born in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany. He became famous from his starring role in the hit TV series, Moonlighting, which aired between 1985 and 1989. he has since become one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood history.

Winston Churchill resigned from the office of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom due to his failing health.

Albert Einstein died in Princeton, New Jersey, at the age of 76.

Italian fashion designer, Donatella Versace, was born in Reggio di Calabria, Italy. She assumed the head position of the Versace group when her brother was shot dead in Miami, in 1997.

American comedian, Dana Carvey, was born in Missoula, Montana. He became a celebrity after the hit "Saturday Night Live" clips of "Wayne's World", which subsequently turned to 2 box office movie hits

During the course of the 24 Hours of Le Mans rally, an Austin-Healey and a Mercedes-Benz collided and subsequently crashed into a crowd of spectators. 82 people died and more than 100 were seriously injured.

Argentinean president, Juan Peron, was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic church by Pope Pius XII.

The Russell-Einstein Manifesto was released by Bertrand Russell in London. It highlighted the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and called for world leaders to seek peaceful resolutions to international conflict. It was singed by several eminent scientists, including Albert Einstein shortly before his death.

The Mainau Declaration against nuclear weapons was signed by eighteen Nobel prize laureates.

Hurricane Diane struck the North eastern United States causing severe flooding and claiming the lives of more than 180 people.

In the Turkish city of Istanbul, the Greek minority population was subjected to a government sponsored pogrom. In what has been known as the 'Events of September', Istanbul's Greek community was assaulted by an overwhelming Turkish mob, the most significant portion of which was trucked into the city for the event by the Turkish government.

President of Argentina, Juan Peron, was deposed after a coup de tat by members of both the army and the navy. Peron remained in exile until 1973.
