	January 2nd	Panamanian president, Jose Antonio Remon, was assassinated.
	January 18th	American actor, Kevin Costner, was born in California.
	January 26th	Dutch-born musician, Eddie Van Halen, was born in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He is one of the founding members of the hard rock band Van Halen.
	February 8th	American writer, John Grisham, was born in Arkansas. He is one of the highest selling novelists of the late 20th and early 21st century.
	February 19th	American actor, Jeff Daniels, was born in Georgia, USA. He is most known for his role in the comedy, Dumb & Dumber.
	February 24th	American computer engineer, Steve Jobs, was born in San Francisco. He is most known as the co-founder of Apple Computer and the CEO of the Pixar animation company. When Pixar was acquired by Disney in 2006, Jobs became the largest single shareholder of Disney.
	February 24th	French race car driver, Alain Prost, was born in Saint-Chamond. He won the formula one championship four times and is considered as one of the greatest race car drivers of all time.
	March 11th	Scottish biologist, Alexander Fleming, died at the age of 73. He is most known for his discovery of the antibiotic penicillin for which he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
	March 17th	American actor, Gary Sinise, was born in Blue Island, Illinois. He became an international star after starring in the blockbuster film, Forrest Gump, alongside fellow actor Tom Hanks.
	March 19th	American actor, Bruce Willis, was born in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany. He became famous from his starring role in the hit TV series, Moonlighting, which aired between 1985 and 1989. he has since become one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood history.
	April 5th	Winston Churchill resigned from the office of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom due to his failing health.
	April 18th	Albert Einstein died in Princeton, New Jersey, at the age of 76.
	May 2nd	Italian fashion designer, Donatella Versace, was born in Reggio di Calabria, Italy. She assumed the head position of the Versace group when her brother was shot dead in Miami, in 1997.
	May 17th	American actor, Bill Paxton, was born in Fort Worth, Texas.
	June 2nd	American comedian, Dana Carvey, was born in Missoula, Montana. He became a celebrity after the hit "Saturday Night Live" clips of "Wayne's World", which subsequently turned to 2 box office movie hits
	June 11th	During the course of the 24 Hours of Le Mans rally, an Austin-Healey and a Mercedes-Benz collided and subsequently crashed into a crowd of spectators. 82 people died and more than 100 were seriously injured.
	June 16th	Argentinean president, Juan Peron, was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic church by Pope Pius XII.
	June 21st	French footballer, Michel Platini, was born in Jeuf. He is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
	June 27th	French actress, Isabelle Adjani, was born in Gennevilliers. She is of German-Algerian parentage and is one of France's best known actresses.
	July 9th	The Russell-Einstein Manifesto was released by Bertrand Russell in London. It highlighted the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and called for world leaders to seek peaceful resolutions to international conflict. It was singed by several eminent scientists, including Albert Einstein shortly before his death.
	July 15th	The Mainau Declaration against nuclear weapons was signed by eighteen Nobel prize laureates.
	July 22nd	American actor, Willem Dafoe, was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. His breakthrough film role was that of the compassionate Sergeant Elias in the critically acclaimed film Platoon.
	August 19th	Hurricane Diane struck the North eastern United States causing severe flooding and claiming the lives of more than 180 people.
	September 6th	In the Turkish city of Istanbul, the Greek minority population was subjected to a government sponsored pogrom. In what has been known as the 'Events of September', Istanbul's Greek community was assaulted by an overwhelming Turkish mob, the most significant portion of which was trucked into the city for the event by the Turkish government.
	September 16th	President of Argentina, Juan Peron, was deposed after a coup de tat by members of both the army and the navy. Peron remained in exile until 1973.
	October 20th	The Return of the King, the last part of The Lord of the Rings, was published for the first time.
	October 26th	Austria declared its permanent neutrality after the last allied troops left the country.
	October 28th	American software designer, Bill Gates, was born in Seattle, Washington. He is the founder of the Microsoft corporation and one of the richest men in the world.
	December 18th	American actor, Ray Liotta, was born in New Jersey. He is most known for his role in the hit movie Goodfellas.
