In the year 1863

	February 7th	The HMS Orpheus sank off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand resulting in the death of 189 sailors.
	March 27th	English, Sir Henry Royce, was born in Huntingdonshire, England. He was the co-founder of the Rolls-Royce Company.
	March 30th	George the 1st was crowned King of England. He was the son of the king of Denmark. He was shot dead in the city of Thessalonica 50 years later.
	April 24th	A massacre of 53 Native American men from the Tehachapi tribe took place in Keyesville, California.
	June 20th	West Virginia was admitted as the 35th US state.
	July 1st	The Battle of Gettysburg begins, marking one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. It was fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and was the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. It is also referred to as the turning point of the war.
	July 3rd	The Battle of Gettysburg ended, bringing an end to the bloodiest battle of the American civil war.
	July 9th	During the course of the American civil war, the siege of Port Hudson came to an end. The siege had lasted for 48 days and resulted in victory for the besieging Union forces.
	July 13th	A series of severe riots began in New York City by opponents of conscription. The riots lasted three days and are considered as the worst in United States history.
	July 30th	American industrialist, Henry Ford, was born in Detroit. He was the founder of the Ford Motor Company and was one of the pioneers of the concept of automobile mass production.
	November 19th	Union President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address during the ceremony for the dedication of the military cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It is one of the most famous and most quoted political speeches ever made.
	December 7th	American enterpreneur, Richard Sears, was born in Minnesota. He was the co-founder of the 'Sears, Roebuck and Company' department stores.
	December 12th	Norwegian painter, Edvard Munch, was born in Adalsbruk, Norway. He is considred as one of the most influential expressionist painters of the 19th and 20th centuries.
