The hit film musical, Grease, was released.
1976 
A non violent march by 15,000 students in Soweto, South Africa turned violent and caused days of massive rioting, in which the South African police killed approximately 566 children.
1969 
British military commander, Harold Alexander, died at the age of 77. He was one of the highest ranking allied officers during the course of the second world war who at the end of the war the Supreme Commander of Allied Armies in Italy.
1966 
Czech athlete, Jan Zelezny, was born in Mlada Boleslav. He is considered as one of the greatest athletes to have ever participated in the sport of javelin throw. he won gold metals in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games as well as a Silver in the 1988 Olympics.
1964 
Leonid Brezhnev became president of the Soviet Union.
1960 
Alfred Hitchcock's legendary horror movie, Psycho, premiered in New York City.
1955 
Argentinean president, Juan Peron, was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic church by Pope Pius XII.
1952 
Greek politician, George Papandreou, junior, was born in Minnesota, United States. He is the grandson of George Papandreou and the son of Andreas Papandreou, both of which had served at the office of the prime minister of Greece.
1948 
The first ever hijacking of a passenger plane took place aboard a Cathay Pacific Airways seaplane.
1942 
Italian motorcyclist, Giacomo Agostini, was born in Lombardy. He is widely considered as the greatest cycle racing driver in history.
1934 
Canadian, hockey coach, Roger Neilson, was born in Toronto, Ontario. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential figure in the world of hockey throughout the 20th century.
1903 
The Ford Motor company was founded by Henry Ford.
1829 
Apache leader, Geronimo, was born in what is now the US state of Arizona. He was one of the most famous American Indian leaders who led the last remnants of resistance against the United States and died as a prisoner of war.
1779 
Spain declared war on Great Britain and subsequently laid siege on Gibraltar.
1723 
Scottish economist, Adam Smith, was born in Fife, Scotland. He is considered by many as the father of free trade, capitalism, and libertarianism.
1487 
The battle of Stoke Field took place. It was the last battle in the Wars of the Roses, which were a series of civil wars fought over the crown of England between the House of Lancaster and the House of York.
