American, Thomas Sutherland, was kidnapped in Lebanon. He was released from captivity 6 years later. He was the dean of agriculture at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon.
1983 
Margaret Thatcher was elected for a second term by a landslide victory in the British General Election.
1981 
Israeli-born actress, Natalie Portman, was born in Jerusalem, Israel. She became a star at the age of twelve after being cast in the hit movie, Leon. She is most known for participating in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
1970 
King Hussein of Jordan escaped an assassination attempt when gunmen opened fire at his motorcade while it was travelling towards the King's summer palace.
1967 
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War.
1963 
American actor, Johnny Depp, was born in Owensboro, Kentucky. He is a highly popular actor, known for his affinity for strange character role and his numerous associations with the prolific director, Tim Burton.
1961 
Canadian actor, Michael J. Fox, was born in Alberta. He was a very popular film and television actor during the 1980's and 1990's, having starred in such successes as the Back to the Future trilogy. In 1991 he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and retired from full-time acting in 2000.
1953 
A tornado hit the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, resulting in the death of 94.
1940 
Norway surrendered to Nazi Germany during the 2nd World War.
1934 
The cartoon character of Donald Duck made his debut in animated film, The Wise Little Hen.
1870 
English writer, Charles Dickens, died at the age of 57. He was one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian times, who wrote such timeless classics as Oliver Twist and Great Expectations.
1672 
Tsar Peter I of Russia was born in Moscow. He was known as Peter the Great for modernizing Russia and making her one of major international powers of his time.
