1998 
Terry Nichols was sentenced to life imprisonment for his part in the Oklahoma City bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. 169 people died in the bombing and over 800 were wounded.
1989 
A natural gas explosion occurs near Ufa, Russia, resulting in the death of 575 people. The explosion occurred when two trains passed close enough from each other to cause sparks to form, which in turn ignited a leaking natural gas pipe.
1989 
The Solidarity party wins the first free parliamentary elections in post-war Poland. This victory sparked off a succession of peaceful anti-communist revolutions in Eastern Europe.
1975 
American actress, Angelina Jolie, was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand.
1970 
Tonga gained its independence from the United Kingdom. Officially known as the Kingdom of Toga, it is only remaining monarchy in the Pacific ocean.
1943 
A Military coup took place in Argentina, ousting then president, Ramon Castillo.
1941 
The last German emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, died at the age of 82 in Doorn, Netherlands. He was forced to abdicate in 1918 and had spent the remainder of his life in exile in the Netherlands.
1929 
American actor, John Drew Barrymore, was born in Beverly Hills, California. He was the father of actress Drew Barrymore.
1928 
German-American sex therapist and author, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, was born in Frankfurt. Best known simply as Dr. Ruth, she is one of the best known sex therapists and authors of her time. She was a soldier with the Israeli army during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
1920 
The Treaty of Trianon was signed in Paris effectively ending the Austro-Hungarian empire. Hungary lost over 70% of its territory in accordance with the terms of the treaty.
1878 
The Ottoman Empire cedes Cyprus to the United Kingdom.
1098 
The city of Antioch fell to the armies of the first crusade after a siege that lasted eight months.
470 BC 
Greek philosopher, Socrates, was born in Athens
