English actor, Rex Harrison, died at the age of 82.
1979 
Pope John Paul II visited his homeland, Poland, he was the first Pope to ever visit a communist state.
1971 
Ajax FC defeated Panathinaikos FC in the final of the European football championship cup.
1955 
American comedian, Dana Carvey, was born in Missoula, Montana. He became a celebrity after the hit "Saturday Night Live" clips of "Wayne's World", which subsequently turned to 2 box office movie hits
1946 
After a referendum, Italy abolished monarchy and established itself as a republic. After the referendum the king of Italy, Umberto II di Savoia, was exiled.
1896 
Italian inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, received a patent for the radio.
1882 
Italian statesman, Giuseppe Garibaldi, died at the age of 75. He was a patriot and soldier who had led many of the military campaigns that brought about the formation of a unified Italy.
1740 
French author, Marquis de Sade, was born in Paris. He wrote several fictitious and philosophical books during his life time. His writing gave rise to term sadism, mostly due to the violent pornographic content of many of his books. The main concept of his philosophy revolved around the idea that the pursuit of personal pleasure should be the highest principle in ones life.
